Neptune and Company (N&C) is able to
provide a multitude of consulting services in environmental decision
analysis, covering diverse disciplines such as environmental modeling,
cost-benefit (economic) analysis, options analysis, statistics, probability,
elicitation, earth sciences, and human health and ecological risk assessment.
Our staff at N&C has a wide variety of specialized
training, years of experience, and extensive knowledge in the technical
disciplines of theoretical and applied statistics. Moreover, an especially
exciting aspect of our company is the ability of each of its members
to communicate the crux of technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
As a consequence, N&C has worked in collaboration with scientists
from a number of fields including ecology, geology, mathematics, chemistry,
and biology. N&C not only brings expert knowledge in statistical
design, analysis and interpretation, but also expertise in many fields
within the environmental sciences.
Currently N&C is involved in a
variety of projects for clients across the U.S. Projects range
from developing open-source web-based
tools to performing classical exploratory data analysis on soil chemistry
results. Specific examples of our capabilities are provided below.
- N&C continues to provide support to the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) in their efforts to streamline redevelopment
of industrially contaminated lands or “brownfields.”
- N&C is developing open-source web-based
software tools for various clients, including the EPA and the Washington
Demilitarization Company.
- N&C was a member of the Core Sediment Work Group
with Battelle and the U.S. Navy. For naval sites in San Francisco Bay,
N&C was charged
with designing a systematic and defensible approach for all facilities
to address problems associated with ecological and human health risk
assessment and cleanup of contaminated sediments.
- N&C was involved in a collaborative project with
statisticians and physicists at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).
The goal of the project
entitled “Monte Carlo for the 21st Century” was to develop
new simulation algorithms and estimation techniques for obtaining thermodynamic
properties of various physical systems
- N&C provided statistical analyses in support
of a human health risk assessment at the Cerrillos Hills Historical
Mining Site for the
New
Mexico Environment Department.
- N&C continues to conduct research into probabilistic
decision analysis for solving complex environmental problems (e.g.,
long-term
monitoring,
stockpile stewardship, redevelopment of contaminated lands)
- N&C performed statistical analysis of environmental
data to support site decision-making, including calculation of contaminant
exposure
concentrations for human health and ecological risk assessments for
the LANL Environmental Restoration
Project.
- N&C continues to build fate and transport models
and risk assessment models at a systems level using the probabilistic
framework program
GoldSim for various government and private clients.
